Which Comes First? Faith or Wisdom

Faith comes before wisdom.

James 1:5–7 (KJV) If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

Sad to say, not everyone who is wise has faith, neither is it that everyone with faith is wise!

James 3:13–18 (KJV) Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. 14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. 16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

How essential it is that we ASK for wisdom, standing firmly on our foundation of faith.  Upon such a foundation, we can rely on God’s promise to give “wisdom that is from above.”  This wisdom is gained through disciplined hearing, obedience, and sheer trust in God.  Don’t ask God for wisdom then miss church!  Don’t ask God for wisdom then ignore His Word!  Don’t ask God for wisdom then “inform” spiritual counsel of your already laid plans!

Carry your burden, your failure, your upset to Jesus, “hat-in-hand,” and inquire after His wisdom.  He promises not to belittle you or slap you down.  (How cruel would it be for the omniscient God to say, “You idiot!  You should have known better!”  No, he will not chide nor ridicule (upbraid) our asking.  When you’ve made such a request, you will not be disappointed!

Thank you, CAC, for reading and receiving the challenge.  WE’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO A BLESSED WEEKEND IN THE HOLY GHOST!

My, how nice it is to have most of you back from Memorial Day weekend vacations.

Please don’t forget the Faith-Wise Living Seminar tomorrow at 10:00 in morning, in the CAC Dining Room.  Steve Lloyd and guests will be presenting the VERY IMPORTANT facts and logistics of Long Term Care insurance and Reverse Mortgages.  Such a meeting will be someone’s answer from the Lord for wisdom.  You’ve been asking in faith, now the wisdom is waiting in this seminar!  (Don’t wait until it’s too late to receive instruction in such matters!  That can be classified as “foolishness!”)  :-))

Finally, pray for the wisdom of those going whitewater river rafting early tomorrow morning.  I hear the water is high and the waves are huge!  They say it’s the perfect time to raft in Colorado.

God bless you all, is my sincere prayer.
